Meshmixer alternative for splitting models (2026)
Meshmixer's last release was 3.5, in 2018. Here is what it did for splitting and repair, and what does those jobs now.
For a decade, Meshmixer was the answer to "how do I cut this STL in half". It was free, it had Plane Cut, Inspector for fixing broken meshes, Separate Shells and Make Solid, and everyone had a copy. Autodesk stopped developing it in 2018; it still downloads, but it is unsupported, the Mac build is showing its age, and the two things it never did well — cuts that aren't flat, and pins you didn't have to build by hand — are the two things people ask about most.
What Meshmixer was doing for you
- Plane Cut — a flat cut through the model, keep one side or both. Fine for a base; less fine across a face or a sleeve.
- Inspector — find holes, flipped normals and floating fragments, and auto-repair them.
- Separate Shells and Make Solid — pull a multi-part model apart, or fuse a mess into one printable solid.
- Sculpt brushes, Hollow, Supports — of which the slicer now does the last two better.
- Pins for the split: there was no tool. You added cylinders from the Meshmix primitives, positioned them by eye, and booleaned them into one half and out of the other.
What does those jobs now
| Tool | Cost | Runs | Cut shape | Joints | Repair |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Meshmixer 3.5 | Free | Windows, older Mac | Plane | By hand | Inspector |
| Slicer cut tools PrusaSlicer, Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer | Free | Desktop | Plane, rotatable | Plugs and dowels | On import |
| Blender | Free | Desktop | Anything, with effort | By hand | By hand |
| LuBan | $625 lifetime or $25/month | Windows | Planes, plus a generated curved cut | Automatic | — |
| Split3r | About €60 | Windows | Plane | Automatic | Separate app |
| Model Splitter | Free | Browser — Windows, Mac, Linux | Plane, or a seam you draw that follows the surface | Pins, loose tenons, magnets | Built in |
Two honest observations from that table. If all you need is a flat cut with a dowel, your slicer already has it, and there is no reason to install anything. And if you want to draw the cut yourself — around an arm, along the edge of the armour, through the fold where nobody will see it — the choice is Blender with an afternoon, or Model Splitter with a mouse.
Meshmixer job by job
Plane Cut
Choose Plane in Cut Tool, pick an axis or the current view, and drag it into place; the tilt control rotates it, and if it crosses several separate areas you can choose which rings to cut. Multi-plane does several at once, and Auto multi-plane works out the fewest cuts that fit your printer's bed from a preset or its dimensions.
Cutting where a plane can't go
Choose Band, draw a loop around the part, and drag the line into the fold or edge where the seam will hide. Line is one quick stroke; Rope is for going carefully round the back. The seam follows the surface, and the pieces come out with pins. There is a step-by-step in How to split an STL that's too big for your print bed.
Inspector
Inspect & repair reports holes, flipped and duplicate faces and loose shells. Repair — safe only cleans up without changing the shape; Advanced patches holes and joined surfaces and can change the shape where it patches, so look at the result.
Separate Shells
Separate the loose pieces makes each disconnected lump its own object. Boolean → Union is the way back.
Make Solid, Boolean, primitives
Shapes adds a cube, ball, tube, cone or ring; Boolean does union, difference and intersect on two closed solids. It is the same toolkit, without the step where Meshmixer turned your model into voxels to get there.
Sculpt
Smooth, Inflate and Flatten brushes with a mask, for the small fixes — a scan artefact, a seam that needs blending — not for sculpting from scratch. Blender is still the sculpting tool.
Questions
Is Meshmixer still available?
Yes. Autodesk still hosts the 3.5 download, and it works on Windows. It is unsupported, and it has not been updated since 2018; on current macOS it is hit and miss. If it does what you need, nothing here is telling you to stop.
Do I have to upload my model?
No. Model Splitter runs in your browser; the file is opened on your machine and the cut happens there. Nothing is sent anywhere.
What about very large models, scans?
Million-triangle scans cut; they take longer. Reduce for cutting makes a lighter working copy for previews and keeps the original for export.
Is the free version going away?
No. Everything is free while it is in beta, and a free edition stays after that. ModelSplitter Pro, the paid edition with the advanced tools — one payment, no subscription — launches on Kickstarter in November.
